As playworkers we very often leave parents out of the equation.
On Adventure Playgrounds it’s generally only during registration that parents are even seen – unless there’s some dispute that brings them to the gates. During estates-based work there often isn’t even that brief contact, and I’m often surprised at how little interest some parents have in the adults spending afternoons with their children.
That said, there are vast numbers of parents who would want to let their children roam more widely than they do, but are afraid of being – or of appearing – negligent.
We take for granted that the freedoms previous generations enjoyed are impossible for today’s children, but that needn’t be the case.
Take a look at this and let me know what you think.
