Introducing – the Pop-Up Play Shop!

It is with enormous pleasure that I invite you all to take a look at the new Pop-Up Adventure Play project, the Pop-Up Play Shop.

We’ve moved into a previously vacant shop in the Queens Arcade, central Cardiff, to create a hub for information and resources to support play.  The project receives funding from Cardiff Council Small Grants, and is delivered in partnership with the Re-Create Scrap Store.

There will be:

  • a loose parts play area, stocked with fantastic recycled materials from Re-Create and staffed by volunteer playworkers
  •  a comfortable seating area for parents, with tea and coffee available for a nominal suggested donation, to encourage conversations between adults
  • an events calendar stocked with arts and crafts classes, writing workshops and other playful opportunities for adults to explore and meet their own needs for play
  • resources and materials to help parents, carers and other adults learn more about how they can support children’s play

It’s a thrilling way of taking the basic ideas of play to transform what we have (empty shopfronts downtown) into what we need (rich and inclusive play environments), bringing children’s play right into the heart of our city centres.

We’ll be keeping the website updated as we develop our programming, so bookmark us, and follow us on Twitter to stay posted.

    1. So am I!

There are some pictures coming up soon of how the playworkers began using the space at http://www.popupplayshop.org. We wanted to create a bit of atmosphere so it wasn’t daunting for the first children to arrive, and I’ll post kid-constructions over there too!
